Institutional Investing
Highland’s Approach to Institutional Investing
The two traits that distinguish Highland Associates from other investment consultants are our focus on not-for-profit health care organizations and our approach to investing. Because we specialize, we have experience that is relevant to the concerns and issues of our clients. We have two former hospital CFOs on staff, who give us a breadth and depth of knowledge that other investment firms find difficult to match. We have also developed a proprietary model that calculates the operating liabilities of a healthcare organization in a manner that is conducive to the development of portfolio policy and strategy.
The overall goal is rooted in the productivity of assets (operating and portfolio) and the blend of capital used to acquire them (debt and equity). This understanding of the sources of capital (debt and equity) is critical to the development of an investment portfolio. A simple review of the sources of capital provides a minimum return hurdle (blend of cost of debt and inflation), which if not met, results in diminishing value.
